q. How we created Project ‘44

A.  The history of the Second World War is first acound in the documents war diaries, complemented by maps, aerial photography and after action reports.This information was gathered during the battle long before historians wrote books about the events. The team at Project’44 used digital preservation techniques to scan maps, aerial imagery and war diaries which had been used by soldiers and used them to map out the advance from the landings at DDay to the celebrations of VEDay. 

  

q. Why we are doing it?

A.  We often get inquiries from family members of veterans who served during the Second World War. There is a clear interest in uncovering family heritage, especially as it relates to the greatest conflict the world has ever known. Wants to provide families members of veterans who served with a helping hand in this respect. 

  

q. What does that mean?

A.  The Project’44 war diaries are full of military specific terminology if you have difficulty understanding here is a useful guide to Acronyms used by the Canada Army during the Second World War. 

 

q. How do you use the webmap?

A.  On map.project44.ca you will see a “?” icon on the lower right part of the screen. This will bring you to a step-by step guided tutorial of the features on the webmap.

 

q. What is Project ‘44?

A.  An online commemoration project set to launch this summer for the 75th anniversary of the DDay landings. The website will combine basemaps, unit positions, and war diaries into an online experience focused on the First Canadian Army in Normandy. 

  

Q. What is the Canadian Research and Mapping Association?

A. The Canadian Research and Mapping Association (CRMA) is a not for profit organization specializing in digital preservation, collection management systems, and mapping military history. 

 

Q. how are the funds raised through donation used for?

A. Our primary expenses are on building the Database that will allow everyone to easily navigate the digitized content. We also apply the funds raised to developing educational content that will support a vast amount of curriculum’s with sourced documents from a National collection.

 

Q. how can I participate and what can i expect as a volunteer?

A. We are a growing organization with a network developing coast to coast. Support is needed in a variety of areas please email info@project44.ca to express your interest in volunteering.

Q. Are you just mapping the canadian army and its content?

  1. While the first Canadian Army is our primary focus, we will also be mapping the RCAF and RCN participation in the Battle of Normandy.
