OPERATION JUBILEE SIGN UP
For the last six months our team has been secretly working on a new project for the 80th anniversary of Operation Jubilee, the Canadian raid at Dieppe on the 19th of August 1942.
This new web map will be animated, showing the raid in its entirety from the crossing of the Channel to the final surrender and includes the main beach landings at Red and White Beaches, the flank landings at Green and Blue Beaches, and the Commando Assaults at Yellow and Orange Beaches.
A brand-new base map has been created from the ground up just for this web map. The town of Dieppe was remapped using modern Open Street Maps, then comparing the data to old maps from 1942. New developments were removed, and old developments long since gone have been re mapped. Roads have been added or removed as necessary as well.
Using Defence Overprints from the 1942 raid, every major gun position, trench line, obstacle and bunker has been mapped out showing the incredible defensive positions the Germans held over the Canadians.
Working with the extensive documents available on the raid, we have been able to accurately map out much of the battle. Each assault wave of Landing Craft has been mapped out to a high degree of accuracy, showing where all the major Companies landed. The major engagements are now able to be shown in a new light as we can now visualize the South Saskatchewan Regiments attempt to cross the bridge over la Scie River, or watch No. 4 Commando raid the guns at Hess Battery.
With the use of the excellent book “Dieppe through the lens”, we are even able to map out the tanks of The Calgary Regiment, and show that many of the tanks did in fact make it off the beach and onto the Promenade.
The web map will be releasing to the public on the anniversary of the raid, but if you are interested in having access even earlier, make sure to sign up to our newsletter. Those who our on our mailing list will get early access to the brand new web map.
